Making College A Reality One Scholarship At A Time

In memory of Dorell Wright’s high school teammate Khelcey Barrs, the D Wright Way Foundation has established a scholarship rewarding multiple graduating seniors who have been accepted into a four year-university. In stride to promote scholastic achievement, leadership development and community engagement, the D Wright Way Foundation awards the scholarship to top students who excelled as community leaders and peer role models.  Applications for the scholarship are accepted April 1- May 30 of each school year and are to include the applicant’s most recent report card, letter of University acceptance and a one-page essay detailing “The impact I plan to make on society by obtaining a higher education”.

Spreading The Holiday Spirit

The D Wright Way Foundation presents a night bustling with generosity and cheer. The annual event began in 2010 and is a testament to the giving spirit of the holiday and the D Wright Way Foundation’s commitment to area youth. In partnership with community organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, single mothers that are burdened with the inability to provide their children with Christmas gifts are partnered with the foundation and surprised with wish-list gifts for the entire family.  Most of the requests are every day life necessities.  Dorell and his family enjoy an intimate night with the families, including hosting a dinner that includes all the Christmas trimmings.

Developing Skills For On And Off The Court

During summer, the D Wright Way Foundation hosts a two-day all-encompassing basketball camp in Walnut Creek & Los Angeles for kids aged 7 to 15. Alongside younger brother & rising NBA star Delon Wright and other special guest appearances by NBA friends, Dorell makes this an experience the kids will never forget. The program fosters participant talent and knowledge of basketball, while incorporating mentorship and life skills development into break out sessions throughout the day. Dorell empowers kids with skills that the campers can take home and continue to develop and grow, both on and off the court.

Giving Thanks By Giving Back

Each year, Dorell and his family host a huge inner-city event in celebration of gratitude during the Thanksgiving season.  Past events have included a 500 Turkey giveaway in Philadelphia, a community dinner serving thousands of impoverished Oakland residents, and a Thanksgiving Festival for the students of Open Meadow Schools in Portland.
